And Why I Still Do What I Do…
Welcome,
I want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding, Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first.
The little boy in my arms with the letters is my son, Brendan Anchor Birren.
I named the office after him.
He is almost four years old in these photos and was absolutely bursting at the seams with joy, curiosity, and health. And, unlike lots of kids his age, this kid was “healthy as a horse.” He has been adjusted his whole life. He knows enough to ask me to adjust him when he feels like he may be getting sick, or sometimes just to stay “tuned up.”
Some people who have seen the photo tell me I should show you another one, so I said, “OK.”

Most parents like to brag about what their children do or achieve. While I have plenty to brag about, let me tell you what my children don’t have: ear infections, asthma, allergies, tonsillitis, frequent colds and flu, or ADHD. They have had chiropractic adjustments since they were born. It seems to good to be true, yet other parents are bringing their children in to see me for the very same reasons.

Let me tell you my story…….
About thirty years ago, something happened that changed my life forever. At the time, I was an engineer working for a construction company in the South Pacific. My specialty was building piers, docks, and breakwaters. It was demanding work, a tough job.
In my free time, I surfed and spear fished —activities that were just as hard on my body.
Eventually, it caught up with me.
I developed severe back pain. At times, my back was so stiff and sore that I had to lie on the floor just to pull on my pants and boots. Pain shot down my leg. Simple tasks at work became difficult or impossible.
I was scared.
I worried about losing my job.
I worried about not being able to do my share of the work.
I worried that this was how the rest of my life would be.
I had to do something, because it just wasn’t getting better no matter what I did.
That’s when I decided to try a Chiropractor.
The chiropractor did an exam, took some films, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment didn’t hurt, it actually felt good. I got relief. In a short time I was doing much better, and again doing well at work, and again enjoying surfing in my free time instead of nursing my aches and pains.
Chiropractic worked so well—and made such an impression on me—that I decided to go to chiropractic school myself.
It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their back problems. Also they come to me with their headaches, migraines, chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, carpal tunnel syndrome, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, just to name a few.
And NOW something even better is happening.
My children have grown.
I have grown older.
That’s life.
Many of my same aged friends are retiring. Slowing down.
Not me.
It’s not that I wouldn’t know what to do with myself. I have plenty of hobbies. I could spend more time snowboarding, surfing, gardening, tinkering with the trucks, or heading out on extended trips with my wife and family. I’ve lived a chiropractic lifestyle. I feel good. I’m not worn out.
But here’s the truth:
It is simply too satisfying to be a chiropractor.
- Taking care of people.
- Helping someone stand up straighter.
- Seeing the relief on a face after a precise adjustment.
- Watching someone regain energy, hope, or confidence.
It’s fun. It’s meaningful. It matters.
Why would I give that up?
Loving what you do is a blessing. Very few people get to say that. I do.
When you walk into our office, you’re not just receiving an adjustment. You’re benefiting from decades of refinement. Looking back, I can honestly say my younger self would be proud of the chiropractor I’ve become.
I am still a student of the Art of the Chiropractic Adjustment — and a student of health itself. There is always more to learn, more to refine, more to master. Over the years I have become more precise, more effective, more confident, and yes — more gentle. Experience has a way of sanding the rough edges while sharpening the edge that matters.
I was fortunate early in my career. I had a true mentor — an old-school Palmer graduate and upper cervical chiropractor — the real deal. He taught me the foundation. The principles. The respect for the adjustment. What I know today rests on that bedrock. The years since have added depth, refinement, and a broader understanding of how beautifully complex the human body truly is.
Now the time has come to pass that skill and experience on.
My son is stepping into this profession.
This next chapter is going to be interesting. It’s going to be fun. And you will benefit from it.
You’ll have the stability of seasoned experience and the energy of the next generation working side by side.
My son will soon be joining me in the office — caring for people just like you — once he completes chiropractic college, passes his national board examinations, and earns his license to practice. He already has excellent hands and a natural feel for the work. Truth be told, he’s been adjusting me since he was little (we’ll keep that between us).

What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s a simple as that!
